Hedwin to retain 300 local jobs
Baltimore plastics manufacturer Hedwin Corp. has purchased a Hampden plant from a Belgian company and will retain the jobs of more than 300 people there.

According to the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development, Gov. Robert Ehrlich directed $2.5 million to Hedwin, which used the money to buy the plant from Belgian giant Solvay Group through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan. Salvoy, was "on the verge" of selling the company, and there were "real concerns" that Hedwin would be moved out of the country, according to DBED.

Hedwin was expected to make the announcement at Friday afternoon press conference at its Roland Heights Avenue offices. Gov. Robert Ehrlich and Lt. Gov. Michael Steele were expected to attend.

Hedwin Corporation was founded in 1946. The company designs and manufactures plastic containers, liner products for pails and drums and other custom plastic parts. The company has manufacturing facilities in Baltimore and LaPorte, Indiana, as well as warehousing and assembly operations in Carson, Calif., and Houston, Texas.
