Samaritan's Purse Success Story
Samaritan’s Purse, an International Relief Organization, was looking for a convenient and economical way to administer Procter & Gamble’s *PuR Purifier of Water sachets. PuR is a method of mixing and filtering contaminated water used for international emergency relief efforts. It is often utilized during the early stages of an emergency response when clean drinking water may not be quickly available on site. Samaritan’s Purse (SP) contacted Hedwin’s, Tom Carpenter, looking for a container solution which could be efficiently transported overseas and robust enough to work in the field. Hedwin’s design team recognized early on that SP needed a complete solution which would provide for the filtration, mixing and storing of all necessary components. With this important objective in mind, Hedwin set about developing a kit that included all of the elements necessary to mix PuR. Quality and durability were critically important features for this application. Hedwin chose their 10 liter CUBITAINER® with a large re-sealable screw cap as the primary kit ingredient and supplied prototype samples to Samaritan’s Purse. The sample kits were taken into the field for evaluation. Using the 10 liter CUBITAINER® size ensured that the relief victims could mix the proper amount of water, maximizing the effectiveness of the purification. Additionally, the closure design provided less chance of contamination compared to other container types. Ultimately, Hedwin produced a kit which included (2) folded 10 liter CUBITAINERS® with handle and 63mm screw cap opening, filter cloth, stirrer, and safety scissors packed in a re-sealable poly bag - complete with instructions for mixing PuR! The kits were packed 14 to a corrugated case with the ability to load 8,232 kits on a 40’ ocean container. Such efficiency would not be possible with other plastic containers such as pails or bottles. Printing Samaritan’s Purse logo on the poly bag and all four sides of the corrugated shipper reinforced the relief organizations message, “…providing aid to hurting people around the world.” Today, Samaritan’s Purse stocks the Hedwin kits in the USA and Dubai for rapid response to emergency sites. In addition to the larger opening Cube®, Samaritan’s Purse utilizes Hedwin’s 10 liter 38mm CUBITAINER® with in-mold handle for other water purification applications as well. |
